SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team closed out the regular season with a 9-0 NEWMAC victory over Emerson College at home on Saturday, clinching sixth place in the conference standings and securing the final spot in next week's NEWMAC tournament.

Mount Holyoke (7-8, 3-5 NEWMAC) will play at third-seeded Wellesley in the first round of the six-team NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday at 4pm. The winner will advance to face second-seeded MIT in the conference semifinals, taking place next Saturday at top-seeded Babson.

The visiting Lions (3-9, 1-7) provided little resistance against the host Lyons, particularly as Mount Holyoke rolled up a 3-0 lead in doubles play. Sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) defeated Sophie Oglensky and Gabrielle McGovern 8-2 at No. 1 doubles; senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) defeated Fuschia Steward and Chase Stinson 8-2 at No. 2 doubles; and first-years Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) defeated Emma Londoner and Carlson Jones 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Chai, Kaur, and Smith also won by 6-2, 6-2 scores for Mount Holyoke at first, second and fourth singles, respectively -- defeating Steward, Oglensky, and Stinson, respectively. Bagley-Fortner allowed only one game against Londoner at sixth singles, and Vavra routed Lauren Germani 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles. Meanwhile Cavale, the spotlight player of the day at Mount Holyoke's lone senior, finished off a 7-5, 6-1 victory over McGovern at third singles, raising her individual singles record to 8-7 this season.
