WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team snapped a three-match skid and took its second NEWMAC victory of the season on Tuesday, winning 9-0 at Clark University.
The visiting Lyons (5-6, 2-3 NEWMAC) had no trouble defeating the host Cougars (1-5, 0-4 NEWMAC) in every doubles and singles match on the day.
Sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) teamed up to defat Hannah Russo and Liliya Georgista 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Chai went on to rout Georgista 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, and Kaur defeated Leilani Brown 6-0, 6-3 at second singles.
Senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) paired up with first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) to defeat Brown and Merielle Kane 8-2 at second doubles. Cavale went on to beat Maeve McEnroe 6-3, 6-1 at third singles, while Smith rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Nardin Seyoufi at fourth singles.
First-years Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) downed McEnroe and Crisi Patel by an 8-4 score at third doubles. Bagley-Fortner finished off a 2-0 day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Emma Allen at sixth singles. The Lyons clinched the win with their second singles victory of the afternoon, as Vavra finished off Kane 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Mount Holyoke plays three of its final four regular-season matches at home, beginning Friday at 4:30pm against Babson College.
