CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team ran into a No. 3 nationally ranked MIT team that had just suffered an upset loss earlier in the week at Babson, and the result was a convincing 9-0 Engineers victory over the visiting Lyons on Saturday afternoon.
MIT (8-3, 4-1 NEWMAC) surrendered only three points to Mount Holyoke in doubles, with Alaina Kolli and Caroline Vincent defeating Mount Holyoke sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) at first doubles; Jay Lu and Sarah Pertsemlidis defeating Mount Holyoke senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) 8-1 at second doubles; Seraphin Castelino and Artemis Pados defeating first-year duo Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) 8-0 at third doubles.
The Engineers went on to sweep the six singles matches in straight sets. Kaur fared the best in terms of score for Mount Holyoke, as she fell 6-0, 6-3 to Vincent at No. 2 singles.
Mount Holyoke (4-6, 1-3 NEWMAC) will look to re-enter the winning column in NEWMAC play Tuesday at 4pm at Clark University.
