Tennis defeats Wheaton 6-3 in NEWMAC opener

NORTON, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team swept doubles play and won the top three singles matchups for a 6-3 victory at Wheaton College on Saturday, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Mount Holyoke Lyons rose to 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in NEWMAC play, while the host Wheaton Lyons dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) teamed up to win 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and then both players picked up straight-sets wins at first and second singles, respectively.

Mount Holyoke senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) also enjoyed a 2-0 day individually, her second in a row. Cavale defeated Alissa Ortiz 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, after teaming up with first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) to defeat Mareike Mueller and Zoe West 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Mount Holyoke took the commanding 3-0 lead after doubles with the help of first-year pair Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) scoring an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Chai defeated Mueller 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Kaur topped Kara Greenlee 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, which at the time gave Mount Holyoke a 5-0 lead and clinched the team win.

Mount Holyoke will host Eastern Nazarene College for a non-conference match Monday at 4:30pm.
