Tennis falls in road match at nationally ranked Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team lost in NEWMAC play for the first time this season, falling 9-0 at nationally ranked Wellesley on Saturday afternoon.

Wellesley (4-4, 3-0 NEWMAC) swept doubles play with ease, allowing just three points to the Lyons (4-4, 1-1 NEWMAC), en route to its fourth consecutive victory.

Lyons sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) fell 8-2 to Annissa Mu and Melinda Alviar at No. 1 doubles. Teaming at No. 2 doubles, first-years Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) lost 8-0 against Cristiana DeAgazio and Emilee Pak. And at third doubles, first-years Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Shanden Plyler (Norwood, N.C.) lost 8-1 to Isabella DeAgazio and Jennifer Fan.

Mount Holyoke couldn't avoid the sweep as the match moved on to singles play, with Kaur faring the best among the Lyons at No. 2 singles, where she lost to Alviar 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile Chai fell 6-2, 6-1 to Mu at first singles; Smith lost to Isabella DeAgazio 6-0, 6-1 at third singles; Vavra played Cristiana DeAgazio to a 6-1, 6-0 loss at fourth singles; Bagley-Fortner fell 6-1, 6-1 to Pak at fifth singles; and sophomore Katie Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) fell 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles to Fan.

The Lyons (4-4, 1-1 NEWMAC) will host Smith College on Tuesday at 5pm.
