Tennis wins at first singles and doubles, falls 7-2 to Smith

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team won at first doubles and first singles, but Smith College claimed the rest of the points on the way to a 7-2 defeat of the Mount Holyoke College tennis team in a NEWMAC match played Tuesday evening on the MHC Tennis Courts.

The host Lyons (4-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) won their lone doubles point at the No. 1 position, where sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) defeated Smith's Lili Goshgarian and Clara Goshgarian by an 8-4 score.

Smith (4-4, 2-2 NEWMAC) still took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, with wins at second and third doubles. Marielle Sauber and Olivia Monos defeated Mount Holyoke senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) 8-4 at No. 2, and at No. 3, Dayana Caluna and Miranda Gibson downed Lyons first-years Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Monclair, N.J.) 8-2.

Chai went on to defeat Lili Goshgarian 6-0, 2-6 [10-2] at No. 1 singles, but the Pioneers won the remaining five points. Clara Goshgarian defeated Kaur 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2; Marielle Sauber defeated Cavale 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3; Olivia Monos edged Cal Smith 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4; Alexa Monos topped Vavra 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5; and Ashley Felix defeated Bagley-Fortner 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Mount Holyoke moves on to play at MIT Saturday at noon; Smith will host Springfield Saturday at 1pm.
