Swimming & Diving Eclipses Smith on Senior Day

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team sent its senior class out in style on Saturday, concluding their home meet slate with a 156-143 victory over Smith College at the MHC Natatorium. The Lyons moved to 4-5 in dual meet action this season.

The Lyons opened the day with a solid victory as the sophomore foursome of Jacqueline Park, Caitlyn Richmond, Naomi Brown and Tamara Mukulu earned victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The group combined for a time of 1:57.66. MHC also earned points for third overall as rookies Adrienne Corr, Emma Sullivan, Gigi Picard and senior Kate Flaherty posted a time of 2:04.58.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Ashton Bliss took top honors with a mark of 11:36.43. Junior Natalie Burkett was fourth with a time of 12:23.97, while senior Delany Berry took fifth with a time of 12:36.18.

The 200-yard free saw sophomore Riley Hicks take third with a time of 2:10.79, followed by Corr, Picard and senior Monika Sharma in fourth (2:10.99), fifth (2:12.01) and sixth (2:33.96), respectively. Park went on to win the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.37, while in the 100-yard breaststroke, Sullivan was third with a time of 1:17.47.

Brown powered her way to second in the 200-yard fly with a mark of 2:24.69, while Mukulu was victorious in the 50-yard free with a time of 26.17.

The 1-meter diving event saw junior captain Samantha Nemivant win with a score of 268.05 points. Sophomore Katie Kolozsvari was third with a score of 232.45 points, while rookie Kathryn Murphy was fourth with a mark of 224.15 points.

Mukulu kicked-off the swimming restart with a victory in the 100-free, notching a time of 58.71, while Park was victorious in the 200-back with a time of 2:16.96. In the 200-breast, Corr posted third with a time of 2:42.39, while Bliss was runner-up in the 500-free with a time of 5:41.88.

Brown and Mukulu then went 1-2 in the 100-fly as Brown notched a time of 1:03.04, while Mukulu had a mark of 1:03.90.

In the 3-meter diving event, Nemivant once again came out on top, posting a score of 256.50 points, while Kolozsvari was second overall with a score of 242.40 points. Murphy was fourth with a score of 221.85 points.

Park continued her winning ways in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.87. In the final event, the 400-free relay, the Lyons saw Hicks, Bliss, Picard and Berry finish second overall with a time of 4:04.92.

Finally the 1-meter diving also did an 11-dive exhibition, which saw Nemivant finish first with a school record mark of 459.55 points. That mark shattered the previous record of 436.25, set by Lauren Griffin '09 during the 2006 season. Kolozsvari placed second in the event with a score of 401.00, which officially qualified her for the NCAA Diving Regional Championships in March.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Thursday, February 21 when it opens action at the 2019 NEWMAC Championships, hosted at WPI.
