Golf Takes Part in Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College golf team competed in the Vassar College Invitational this weekend, earning eighth place overall. A total of 11 squads participated in the two round tournament, which took place at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club (par 72 - 5,805 yards).

Mount Holyoke was paced by first year Madi Mendiola, who grabbed 13th place with a two day total of 170 (84, 86). Junior Felicitas Gerlach carded a 170 (92, 85) to take 22nd place. Meanwhile, first year Rebecca Berger finished 40th (190 – 102, 88), and classmate Hannah Falvey placed 49th (203 – 105, 98).

Amherst College claimed the team title with its score of 663. The Lord Jeffs narrowly edged out Middlebury College, which finished just four strokes off the pace with a score of 667. Williams College (682), Vassar (691), Ithaca College (691), St. Lawrence University (718), New York University (718), Mount Holyoke (740), Wellesley College (815), William Smith College (819) and Nazareth College (856) rounded out the field.

Middlebury's Flora Weeks earned medalist honors after holding off Amherst's Elizabeth Monty in a two-hole playoff. Both players carded matching scores of 159.

Mount Holyoke will tee off again next weekend at the annual Jack Leaman Championship. The tournament, which will take place at both the Orchards and Amherst Golf Club, is slated to begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
