Field Hockey Concludes Regular Season With 4-0 Win at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - Powered by a three-goal second half, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team concluded its 2016 regular season in fine fashion, besting Wheaton College by a 4-0 margin in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lyons of MHC move to 11-6 overall and finish conference play with a 5-3 mark. The Lyons of Wheaton are now 7-10 on the season, finishing 2-6 in the NEWMAC.

MHC opened the game's scoring at the 14:00 mark as junior captain and forward Kaitlin Braz sent a slow dribble in past Wheaton keeper Riley Thompson. Holding a 5-2 edge in shots, the visitng Lyons carried that momentum into the second half as junior midfielder Sophie Perekslis fired in a loose ball in the circle at 43:28 off a pass from Braz.

Just over five minutes later, Mount Holyoke answered once again, this time on a shot from junior Kathryn Rawson. Off a penalty corner, the ball was sent over by senior Charlotte Wagner, landing on Rawson's stick as she sent it past Thompson for the 3-0 advantage.

Junior defender Cymone Martin then concluded the scoring at the 69:08 mark, firing in a pass from sophomore Mirjam Keochakian for the 4-0 margin.

In the MHC goal, senior captain Liz DiCesare earned the victory, stopping two shots over 61:41 minutes of action. Classmate Ally Tessier came on for the final 8:19 of play, but was not forced to make a stop. In the Wheaton goal, Thompson finished with five stops.

Mount Holyoke held a 16-2 advantage in shots, owning a 16-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Lyons of MHC return to action on Tuesday when they compete in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals. Mount Holyoke is the fifth-seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Wellesley. Game time will be 3pm. Wheaton's season concluded with today's game.
