Field Hockey Powers Past Wesleyan, 4-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Backed by goals from four different scorers, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team shutout Wesleyan University, 4-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the victory, the Lyons even their mark to 3-3 overall, while the Cardinals slip to 1-4 on the year.

MHC jumped out the lead in the opening half as sophomore midfielder Colby Newsham scored unassisted at the 21:59 mark. The Lyons made it a 2-0 advantage less than five minutes later as senior forward Charlotte Wagner fed a shot to sophomore midfielder Mirjam Keochakian for her second tally of the season.

The Lyons played a strong opening half, holding the Cardinals to an 8-2 margin in shots for the first 35 minutes. MHC also owned a 4-1 edge in penalty corners to open the game.

In the second stanza, the Lyons continued to charge. Wagner recorded her team-leading sixth of the year at 40:35, connecting on a feed from junior forward and captain Kaitlin Braz for the 3-0 advantage.

Eight minutes later saw the visitors record their fourth and final goal as first year Anna Ballou scored the first of her collegiate career. She was assisted on the tally by Wagner, which was her second helper of the evening.

In goal, Mount Holyoke was paced by senior captain Liz DiCesare, who earned the victory with one save over 64:00 minutes. She was relieved late in the frame by classmate Ally Tessier, who was not forced to make a stop in the final six minutes.

For Wesleyan, Claire Edelman shouldered the loss, making three saves over 45:28 of action. Delaney Wood came on in relief for the Cardinals, recording three saves in 24:32 minutes.

The Lyons posted a 20-4 advantage in shots for the game, along with a 9-2 clip in penalty corners.

MHC returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Wellesley to open NEWMAC action against the Blue. Match time is set for 12pm. Wesleyan is also in action on Saturday, traveling to NESCAC-rival Bates at 11am.
