BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced its weekly awards and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Charlotte Wagner was recognized. The senior forward was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Lyons to a key win over in their only match last week.
A native of West Chester, Pa., Wagner notched two goals, including the eventual game-winner, and added an assist as the Lyons defeated Clark University by a 5-1 margin on Saturday. She also boasted a match-best 13 shots, including nine on goal for MHC.
Wagner scored the game's second goal on an incredible individual effort, corralling the ball in the defensive zone before taking it nearly the length of the field unassisted past multiple defenders. Racing in on goal, she was able to tip it forward, with the ball trickling in under the Clark goalie and into the cage (WATCH CLIP). Wagner also added the fourth goal of the contest, connecting off a pass for a shot down the middle past the goalie's left side (WATCH CLIP).
Through eight games this season, Wagner leads the Lyons in nearly every offensive statistical category, including goals (8), assists (4), points (20), shots (40) and shots on goal (25). She has also notched at least one goal in five of eight contests, including a hat trick in MHC's 6-2 win against Castleton on September 10.
Among the NEWMAC leaders, Wagner is fourth among the conference's best in shots and shots on goal. She's also ranked fifth in assists and is sixth in both goals and points.
The former Westtown School standout started all 22 games during her junior season, recording 19 goals and 12 assists for 50 points. She ranked first in the NEWMAC in goals, points and shots, while also ranking second in assists. Wagner, who was a 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA New England East Region Second Team selection, was also a NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week honoree.
Wagner started all 21 games as a sophomore, finishing with 12 goals and 13 assists for 37 points. She was second on the squad in both assists and points, while finishing third in goals. Additionally, she was second in the conference in assists and fourth in points. Among her goals was the game-winning shot as the Lyons defeated MIT, 1-0 in the NEWMAC Semifinals. As a first year, Wagner recorded 11 goals with 11 assists as a starter in 21 games. She ranked fourth in the NEWMAC in assists and was a conference Offensive Player of the Week.
