Basketball Defeated by Clark, 76-50

WORCESTER, Mass. (Jan. 12, 2008) - Junior Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) exploded for game-highs of 23 points and ten rebounds to power the Clark University women's basketball team to a 76-50 triumph over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center. Roderigue was nearly unstoppable in the contest. The forward shot 7-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. She also drained all five of her free-throw attempts. The Cougars improved to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Mount Holyoke dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in Conference.

Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for Clark, which shot 40.6% (26-64) from the floor and 89.5% (17-19) from the charity stripe. The Cougars dominated the glass, outrebounding the guests 45-26. Junior guard Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) recorded 13 points, a game-best eight assists and five rebounds. She converted all five of her shots from the field and connected for three of Clark's seven treys. The hosts also received solid production from sophomore forward Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional), who tallied 15 points.

Mount Holyoke was limited to just 37.3% (19-51) shooting from the field and committed 27 turnovers. Senior forward Marisa Barone (Ludlow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) paced the Lyons with team-highs of 15 points and six rebounds. The visitors also received a boost from first year guard Amber Sinicrope (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), who drained a pair of three-pointers en route to 12 points. Sophomore forward Jess Olson (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) collected eight points, while junior guard Katie Austen (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) added five points and a squad-best five assists.

Clark gained control of the contest midway through the first half, when it used a 10-0 run to open up a 31-15 edge. Hagstrom knocked down a pair of triples during that stretch. The Cougars led by as many as 17 points (35-18) in the opening frame. They took a 39-24 cushion into the locker room. Roderigue led all scorers with 15 points at the break.

A three-pointer by Sinicrope brought Mount Holyoke to within 12 points (41-29) at the 16:41 mark of the second stanza. From there, it was all Clark. The hosts answered with a 12-4 run to put things out of reach. Their 27-point advantage (68-41) with 3:20 remaining in regulation was their largest of the afternoon. Barone netted 11 of her 15 points after the intermission.

Mount Holyoke (2-10, 0-2 NEWMAC) will play its second of three straight road games on Thursday, when it visits non-conference foe Emerson College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
