Track Competes At Springfield College Massasoit Invite

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -  The Mount Holyoke College track and field team was in action on Saturday, competing at the non-team scoring Springfield College Massasoit Invitational. Pacing the Lyons was sophomore Donari Yahzid and first year Charleen Theroux who had solid performances in the long jump.

Yahzid (Atlanta, Ga./Fountain Valley School of Colorado) placed first in the long jump with a mark of 5.00 meters. Theroux (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) also had an excellent performance, placing second with a distance of 4.97m. Both distances were a New England Division III qualifying mark. This is the second time Yahzid has qualified this year.

The weight throw saw sophomore Julia Hecking (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) crack the top-five with a 10.67 meter throw, while also placing 11th in the shot put with a distance of 8.83m. Junior Shante Henderson (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Theatre Arts School) was sixth in the shot put, with a distance of 10.18m.

In addition to her performance in the long jump, Theroux also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 27.50. Yahzid placed 20th with a time of 29.02.

The Lyons performed well in the 1000-meter run, seeing sophomore Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Alternative High School) finish ninth in a time of 3:32.88. First year Michelle Serrano (Los Angeles, Calif./West Adams Preparatory) and junior Hannah Gershone (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) placed 11th and 12th with times of 3:37.44 and 3:37.69, respectively.

Junior Mia Barnes (Thornville, Ohio/Monteverde Friends School) and Moss finished in the top 10 in the one mile run, while Gershone was 11th. Barnes was seventh (5:45.78), Moss placed ninth (5:47.57), and Gershone crossed the line in 5:50.82.

Mount Holyoke will compete next Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational, starting at 10:00am in Middletown, Connecticut.
