Track & Field Posts Strong Effort at Smith College Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College track & field team finally opened its outdoor season on Saturday, competing at the non-team scoring Smith College Invitational. The Lyons were paced by junior Shante Henderson, who won the 100-meter hurdles.

Henderson had an outstanding effort in the hurdles, winning in a time of 16.30. That time not only gave her the win, but was also a New England Division III qualifying mark. Henderson also helped the 4x100-meter relay team to third overall. The foursome of first years Minerva Veeser-Bobea and Caitlin Lynch, Henderson and sophomore captain Donari Yahzid posted a time of 53.76.

Lynch also placed 18th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.88, while sophomore Corrin Moss was sixth overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:40.97. Also finishing strong in the 800 was junior Julia Criscione and first year Emma Raney, who placed 13th (2:48.87) and 14th (2:49.26), respectively.

In the 1500-meter run, first year Alicia Moroyoqui was fifth with a time of 5:18.30, while Moss placed eighth with a time of 5:23.30. Junior Mia Barnes rand to second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:31.37, while classmate Hannah Gershone was fourth in a time of 20:44.95. The Lyons also saw the 4x400m relay place fifth with a time of 4:41.40.

The field events saw sophomore Julia Hecking place eigth in the discus with a throw of 26.30 meters, before going on to place ninth in the hammer throw with a distance of 31.31 meters.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it hosts its own SpringFling Invitational at the MHC Turf and Track Complex. Action begins at 11am.
