Two Garner NEWMAC Weekly Honors in Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) recently announced its weekly award winners in women's lacrosse and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Kirsten Kilburn and Brianne Phelan were both recognized. Kilburn garnered Offensive Player of the Week, while Phelan was named the Defensive Performer of the Week.

Kilburn, a junior captain and midfielder out of North Branford, Conn., posted her first weekly award of the season after helping the Lyons to a 2-0 record last week. She recorded a team-best seven goals to go along with three ground balls, nine draw controls and a caused turnover. Her highlight performance of the week came in an 11-9 victory at Wellesley where she scored a game-high four goals to lift MHC to its first NEWMAC victory of the season and first against the Blue since 2010.

Through 11 games this season, Kilburn ranks second on the team in scoring with 39 goals and five assists for 44 points. Additionally, the former North Branford High School standout leads the NEWMAC in a number of categories, including ground balls (41), draw controls (77) and caused turnovers (19).

A senior captain and midfielder from Quincy, Mass., Phelan recorded a number of critical caused turnovers last week. She notched two goals and an assist in a hard-fought win against Western Connecticut State, adding three draw controls and ground balls to go with two caused turnovers. Phelan then helped lift the Lyons over Wellesley, tallying a goal with two assists and two caused turnovers.

For the season, Phelan has started all 11 games, notching seven goals and five assists for 12 points. She ranks sixth on the team in scoring and has also contributed with 27 ground balls, nine draw controls and 10 caused turnovers.

Mount Holyoke returns to the field this evening when it hosts Emerson on the Turf Field at 6pm. The contest is not only the Game of the Week, but also Senior Night as the Lyons honor their three graduating seniors.
