Mendiola Named Liberty League Performer of the Week in Golf

TROY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2012) – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Madi Mendiola was tabbed as the Performer of the Week for her performance at last weekend's NYU Invitational.

A sophomore from San Diego, Calif., Mendiola shot a combined 157 over the two-day event, finishing in a two-way tie for fifth place. She set the tone for the Lyons on day one, posting a score of 80 on the Par 72 course at the Pelham Bay Golf Course. Mendiola lowered her score on day two, shooting a 77 overall on the day for the fifth-place finish. As a team, the Lyons finished 11th overall.

The former Rancho Bernardo High School standout made an immediate impact on the squad last season, racking up five top ten finishes.  Mendiola also posted the second best scoring average in school history (81.27) and ended her rookie season ranked 12th in the region.

Prior to attending Mount Holyoke, Mendiola was a four-year varsity athlete in high school, serving as captain of the golf team. In addition to earning All-League recognition, she played in the California High School Girls State Golf Tournament as a sophomore

Additionally, Mendiola was a two-time participant at The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and also played in the Jack Newton International Golf Tournament in Australia during her senior year of high school.

Mendiola and the Mount Holyoke squad returns to the links this weekend hosting the 2012 Mount Holyoke Invitational at The Orchards. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday. Start times for both days is 8am.
