Varsity eight takes fourth place in grand final in spring rowing opener

SHREWSBURY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College rowing team got its first racing of the spring season Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond, and the Lyons saw their first varsity eight advance to the grand final against strong competition including Washington College, Williams, Connecticut College, WPI and host Clark University.

In its three-boat morning preliminary heat, Mount Holyoke's 1V8 (7:51.29) was edged by Clark (7:46.69) over the 2,000-meter course, but outraced Washington College (8:07.09).

In the grand final later in the morning, Mount Holyoke took fourth place out of six boats in 7:36.77, 3.19 seconds behind third-place Clark (7:33.58) and beating Connecticut College (7:40.17) by 3.40 seconds and Washington College (7:50.57) by 13.80 seconds. Williams (7:11.87) won the race, followed by WPI (7:25.22).

Mount Holyoke's second varsity eight also outraced Washington College in placing fifth out of six boats in the only 2V8 race of the day. Williams (7:23.09) won the race, followed by WPI (7:42.54), Clark (7:55.58), Connecticut College (8:16.94), Mount Holyoke (8:32.49) and Washington College (8:56.06).

The Lyons return to Lake Quinsigamond to race next Saturday, April 20 against Assumption and Coast Guard.
