With head coach Andy Whitcomb at the helm, the Mount Holyoke field hockey team qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament for the 12th year in a row. The Lyons closed out the 2010 season with an overall record of 11-6 and a league mark of 5-3. It was their most wins since the 2005 campaign. They outscored their opponents 39-24 and came up with six one-goal victories.
Mount Holyoke field hockey head coach Andy Whitcomb was recently inducted into the St. Luke’s School Athletic Hall of Fame. Ceremonies took place on Saturday night in Carey Gymnasium. Whitcomb was joined in the inaugural class by nine other honorees, including her father.
Prior to the annual athletics awards celebration last Thursday, 24 Mount Holyoke seniors representing 12 teams were honored as part of the College's third annual Scholar Athlete Reception. The recognition event highlighted those student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom.
The Mount Holyoke Department of Athletics hosted its annual awards celebration this evening in Chapin Auditorium. Individuals from all 14 varsity teams were honored. Volleyball player Kara Neidhardt served as the event’s emcee. Rider Lindsay Sceats earned the prestigious Alumnae Association Scholar-Athlete Award.

Coaching legend Sherry Webb has joined the program as an assistant coach after an impressive 37-year stint on the sidelines at Smith Academy. Meanwhile, center midfielder Aurora Rogeau will suit up for the Lyons after an outstanding career at Mohawk Trail Regional.
Mount Holyoke juniors Tricia Chase and Christine Chancy recently attended the NCAA Winning Careers in Athletics Forum at the Hall of Champions in Indianapolis, Indiana. The program was held from April 5-6 in conjunction with the Women’s Division I Basketball Championship.
Hundreds of Mount Holyoke athletes gathered on Skinner Green this afternoon for a flash mob to celebrate National Student-Athlete Day. Members of both varsity and club sports participated in the event, which was designed to showcase the unity that exists among athletes across campus.
Mount Holyoke's field hockey team was recently recognized by the NFHCA for achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. In addition, 10 individual members of the team were named to the 2010 NFHCA National Academic Squad. Individual recipients were Siobhan Anderson, Kiki Boyles, Annie Butts, Melissa Hartley, Taylor Hedges, Emily McClintock, Stephanie Slysz, Meredith Spencer-Blaetz, Maddy Starbranch and Kirsti Wiemokly.
Mount Holyoke is once again one of the nation's 50 "Best Value" private colleges and universities, according to the Princeton Review. The educational services company teamed with USA Today to present the list of "The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2011" on February 22. The list features 100 schools in all - 50 private and 50 public colleges and universities.
Mount Holyoke field hockey player Stephanie Slysz has been named to the womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Squad as a result of her outstanding play this fall. The first year was one of just 16 players from around the country to be selected to the team. Earlier this month, she was voted to the NFHCA All-Region Second Team.
Mount Holyoke field hockey players Shara Robertson, Taylor Hedges, Tricia Chase, Katie Gibson and Stephanie Slysz have earned NFHCA All-Region accolades as a result of their outstanding play this fall. Robertson and Hedges were named to the New England East First Team, while Chase, Gibson and Slysz earned Second Team honors.

Junior field hockey player Shara Robertson has been named Lyon of the Week for the week of October 25-31 after recording hat tricks in wins over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Springfield College. The forward got her week going with three goals in Mount Holyoke's 4-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday. After pushing her team's lead to 2-0 in the early stages of the first half, she scored two more times in the second half to put things away. She recorded her second straight hat trick in Mount Holyoke's 4-1 victory over Springfield on Saturday. It was her fourth triple of the year and the sixth in her outstanding career. Robertson got the Lyons on the board 7:54 into the first half and then scored two more times to highlight their three goal eruption in the first 4:30 of the second stanza.

At stake is homefield advantage for the Quarterfinal Round of the NEWMAC Tournament. Last fall, the Lyons downed Springfield 2-1 in overtime. Field hockey goalkeeper Katie Gibson has been named Lyon of the Week for the week of October 11-17. The junior racked up 28 saves in a perfect 2-0 week for Mount Holyoke. Gibson turned away 13 shots in the Lyons' 3-0 victory over Castleton State College on Wednesday. In the process, she held the Spartans' explosive offense scoreless for the first this year. It was Gibson's fifth shutout of the year and 12th of her outstanding career. She was was at it again in Mount Holyoke's stunning 3-2 overtime triumph over MIT on Saturday, when she amassed a season best 15 saves. Of those, five came in overtime. With the win, the Lyons put an end to MIT's nine match winning streak. The Engineers entered the contest sitting atop the NEWMAC standings with a perfect 5-0 mark.
