Tennis Falls in NEWMAC Action at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team was back on the courts on Tuesday, squaring-off against Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference road action. The homestanding Lyons of Wheaton improve to 4-5 and 2-1 in conference play with the 6-3 win, while the visiting Lyons of MHC are now 8-7 and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.

Doubles action kicked things off and Wheaton grabbed its first point as senior Ines de Bracamonte and rookie Miriam Galindo Cerrada bested junior Ching-Ching Huang and senior Ayame Yazawa by an 8-2 margin from the top spot.

Mount Holyoke countered at three to tie the match as senior Joy Maran and sophomore Anya Gerasimova recorded an 8-6 victory over senior Connor O'Keefe and junior Harley Swainston. MHC then took a 2-1 match lead as junior Catherine Peabody and rookie Annissa Aamoum battled past junior Isabelle Garvanne and sophomore Allison Burton for an 8-2 victory.

Heading into singles action, Wheaton evened the match to 2-2 as de Bracamonte bested Yazawa 6-3, 6-2 from one. The homestanding Lyons edged ahead with a win at two as Gavanne defeated Huang, 6-3, 6-2.

At four, O'Keefe made it a 4-2 edge for Wheaton with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Gerasimova and the home squad sealed the match win at five as Burton bested Aamoum, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. From six, Swainston recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lyons' rookie Hannah Middleton.

Mount Holyoke earned its singles point in the final match as Peabody took on Galindo Cerrada. After falling 6-3 in the opening set, Peabody battled back with a 7-5, 7-5 counter to win the game.

MHC is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Babson at 12pm. Wheaton is also in action on Saturday, travelling to Springfield for a 10:30am match against the Pride.
