Tennis Earns 9-0 Victory in Fall Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team opened its short fall slate of action on Saturday, posting a 9-0 victory over Simmons University at the MHC Tennis Courts. The Lyons are now 1-0, while the Sharks slip to 0-4 overall.

Doubles action got things started as Lyons' senior Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt.) and junior Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls' HS) earned an 8-1 victory over Sharks' junior captain Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.) and classmate Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) at one.

Senior Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep) and rookie Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va./IMG Academy) put the Lyons up 2-0 from three following an 8-1 win against Simmons' rookies Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine/Maine Girls Academy) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn./Stamford).

MHC junior Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and sophomore Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore./West Salem) then closed out doubles action at two against senior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla./Riviera Preparatory School) and classmate and captain Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) with another 8-1 win.

Singles action then took center stage as Peabody earned the first win at three with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Medici. Senior Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) then pushed the Lyons to a 5-0 advantage, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win against Mariski at five.

MHC senior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) went on to make a 6-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Brown at six, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory from Gerasimova over Simmons' Rios from four.

The Lyons saw Huang victorious at two with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Johnson, while Yazawa wrapped up the match at one with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Nguyen.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on September 21st when it heads to Newport, R.I., to take part in the Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament. Simmons is back in action tomorrow, hosting Lesley at 12pm.
