NEWPORT, R.I. – In its second straight appearance, the Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team won the Flight A final and reached the Flight C final to total 12 points and capture the 2018 Grass Court Doubles Championships hosted by Salve Regina University at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.
With over 50 different players in the field, the Lyons earned a combined 12 points to earn the team victory. Nichols College and the College of the Holy Cross each earned 10 points, while Colby-Sawyer College and Johnson & Wales University had six points each. Salve Regina's blue team earned four points, its green team had three, while Saint Joseph rounded out the field.
In the flight A quarterfinals, junior Ching-Ching Huang and senior Ayame Yazawa defeated Katya Martin and Allison Reiling from Holy Cross by an 8-2 margin. The pair then went on to the semifinals where they posted an 8-3 victory over Isabelle Leonardi and Amarie Settiwongse from Nichols. In the championship final, the duo faced off against Salve Regina's Lauren Harvey and Makenzie Sadler, earning the title with an 8-2 victory.
The flight B quarterfinals saw junior Catherine Peabody and sophomore Anya Gerasimova shoulder a tough 8-3 loss to Nichols' Rachel McDonald and Megan Nathanson. Moving into the consolation round, the pair squared off in the semifinals against Saint Joseph's Domonique Carnot and Ashley Savino, earning an 8-1 win to advance to the consolation championship. The Lyons duo went on to win the consolation championship, besting Salve Regina's Shealyn FitzPatrick and Laura Krick, 8-2.
In the final flight C, rookie Annissa Aamoum paired with senior Joy Maran to earn an 8-0 win over Salve Regina's Madeleine Archer and Nina Branch. Advancing to the semifinals, the duo then notched an 8-4 win over Nichols' Juliana Herrera and Lindsey Kaplan. In the championship final, the Lyons pair was unable to hold off Holy Cross's Maddie DeNucci and Jennifer Kary, falling 8-2.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Friday when it travels to Williams College for the 2018 ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Action at the event runs through Sunday.
