Swimming and Diving Claims Victory, 163-131, over Smith; Murphy Breaks One-Meter Board School Record

South Hadley, Mass. - February 5, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team defeated New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Smith College, 163-131, at the MHC Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Leading Mount Holyoke to the win was senior Kathryn Murphy (Fairport, N.Y.) who broke her own school and pool record in the one-meter board.

Murphy claimed the victory in the one-meter board with a score of 293.17 points which breaks the school record of 289.80 set by the senior last weekend at the home meet against Western New England. The mark of 293.17 also breaks the MHC Natatorium facility record.  

Mount Holyoke started off the meet placing second in the 200 medley relay as junior Anais Magner (Whakatane, New Zealand), first-year Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), classmate Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany), and senior Caitlyn Richmond (Florence, Mass.) recorded a time of 2:01.40.

In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) finished second overall, posting a time of 11:32.54. Classmate Lily Nemirovsky (Bedford, Mass.) followed in third notching a time of 11:59.17. In the 200 freestyle, senior Gigi Picard (Wilmette, Ill.) placed second recording a time of 2:10.51.

Mount Holyoke went one-two-three in the 100 breaststroke as sophomore Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) posted a winning time of 1:06.28. Magner finished second clocking in a time of 1:07.53, while junior Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas) followed in third with a time of 1:08.87. 

In the 100 breaststroke, Schneider took second overall finishing with a time of 1:16.53, while junior Erin Schrama (Providence, R.I.) placed third with a time of 1:16.58. Heierhoff claimed second in the 200 butterfly posting a time of 2:22.00, followed by Nemirovsky in third with a time of 2:33.31. 

The Lyons went one-two-three again in the 50 freestyle as Richmond claimed the victory notching a time of 26.68. Diouf placed second recording a time of 27.63, while Picard followed in third posting a time of 27.91. In the 100 freestyle, Schneider garnered the victory clocking in a time of 58.61, while Schrama finished in third with a time of 1:00.49. 

In the 200 back, Heierhoff collected the win posting a time of 2:22.10, followed by Leese in second with a time of 2:25.63. In the 200 breaststroke, Williams claimed second finishing in a time of 2:38.31. Sophomore Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) finished second overall in the 500 freestyle recording a time of 5:45.35, followed by Nemirovsky in third with a time of 5:49.90.

Mount Holyoke continued their success as Heierhoff placed second in the 100 butterfly notching a time of 1:04.40. Williams claimed second in the 200 individual medley finishing with a time of 2:25.01 while Leese followed in third with a time of 2:26.98.

Finishing off the swimming events, Mount Holyoke placed third in the 400 freestyle relay as Diouf, Schrama, Schneider, and Richmond posted a time of 3:55.82.

On the diving board, Murphy finished first in her record-breaking one-meter board performance of 293.17. First-year Sophie Simon (Menlo Park, Calif.) finished in second in the one-meter board by posting a mark of 248.17 qualifying her for the NCAA Division III Regional Championship. Sophomore Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed third with a mark of 217.95. Later in the afternoon on the three-meter, Murphy claimed another win recording a score of 282.98, while Simon finished second posting a score of 250.27. First-year Lilje Stratton (Bellevue, Wash.) followed in third with a mark of 226.49.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Thursday, February 17 at the NEWMAC Championships hosted by MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
