SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Wheaton College received two first-half goals from Sadie Recht, including a penalty shot, and went on to defeat Mount Holyoke College 6-1 in a NEWMAC battle of Lyons Saturday at MHC Soccer Field.

The visiting Wheaton Lyons rose to 6-5-1 overall and 3-2 in NEWMAC play, while the host Mount Holyoke Lyons fell to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

Wheaton wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Recht intercepted a Mount Holyoke pass 20 yards away from the goal and quickly blasted a shot over Mount Holyoke first-year goalie Clarissa Govea's (Pico Rivera, Calif.) head and in.

Wheaton made it 2-0 just three minutes later, as Claire Donfield scored from close to the same spot as Recht's goal. Donfield was able to catch up to the ball near the right top corner of the penalty area, turn and line up a shot that sailed over Govea's head before settling into the left netting.

A Mount Holyoke defender committed a foul in the penalty area in the 26th minute, allowing Recht to take and make a penalty shot for a 3-0 lead that Wheaton took into halftime -- the fifth penalty shot goal allowed by Mount Holyoke this season.

After a free kick by Mia Wolfgang into the box, a Mount Holyoke defender got a foot on a loose ball that presented Kate Wickenheisser with an unobstructed view of the goal, which Wickenheisser converted with a high shot under the crossbar and in.

Mount Holyoke cut into Wheaton's lead in the 68th minute with its first goal in a conference game this season. Centering Mount Holyoke's defensive line from near midfield, first-year Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) sent a high ball toward the Wheaton goal, where first-year Ada Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany) caught up to it and volleyed the ball past advancing goalie Gabby Marcus for her first career goal.

Wheaton led 4-1 late in the game before adding two final scores. In the 87th minute, Govea deflected but didn't control a Wheaton cross from the right side, and Makenzie Paulo ran on to the loose ball and buried a hard shot into the goal to make it 5-1.

Shortly after, with 1:56 left in the game, Lily Brown made it 6-1 in Wheaton's favor. Brown tracked down a long entry ball from Wolfgang and poked the ball past Govea for the final margin of victory.

Govea made 11 saves for Mount Holyoke, while Marcus made four saves for Wheaton, as the visitors enjoyed a 26-11 advantage in shots attempted.

Mount Holyoke continues conference play with a game at Clark University on Wednesday at 7pm.
