Marshall Lifts Soccer Past Emerson, 2-0

BOSTON, Mass. - Powered by two goals from first year Sara Sanaú Ruiz, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. With the victory, the Lyons move to 5-2-1 and 1-0-1 in conference play, while the Lions are now 7-1-1 and 0-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

The goal scoring kicked off for Mount Holyoke in the 31st minute as Sanaú Ruiz sent a shot in on Lions keeper Melanie Escobar on the breakaway. Escobar made a great move to stop the ball, but inadvertantly sent the ball backwards on the punchout stop.

Mount Holyoke's second tally, which came less than eight minutes later, once again saw Sanaú Ruiz on a breakaway with the goalie. This time, the Lyons forward sent a shot in that was beyond the reach of Escobar for the 2-0 advantage.

Emerson had a number of chances, but were never able to get one past Mount Holyoke keeper Zoe Marshall, who recorded a season-high 19 saves in the victory.

The Lions outshot MHC by a 32-3 margin and held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks for the game. Escobar did not make any saves for Emerson in the loss.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Bay Path at 6pm. Emerson is back on the field next Saturday in a 1:30pm game at WPI.
