Soccer Duo Sweeps NEWMAC Weekly Honors

BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced its weekly awards and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Sara Sanaú Ruiz and Zoe Marshall have swept the awards for women's soccer. Sanaú Ruiz was named the conference's Offensive Performer of the Week, while Marshall was the Defensive Performer of the Week selection.

Both have helped the Lyons to a 5-2-1 overall mark and a 1-0-1 record in NEWMAC play. As a team, the Lyons have gone unbeaten in their last five contests, posting a 4-0-1 mark.

Sanaú Ruiz, a first year forward from Zaragoza, Spain, scored all five goals for the Lyons last week. In a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), she recorded her first collegiate hat trick, tallying two of her goals in the second half including the game winner. She added a game-best four shots, including three on goal.

The P.P. Dominicos - Cardenal Xavierre graduate then helped Mount Holyoke to a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Emerson. She recorded both scores for MHC, less than eight minutes apart for her team-leading 10th and 11th goals of the season.

A starter in all eight games, Sanaú Ruiz leads the Lyons in scoring with 11 goals for 22 points. She also owns a team-best 49 shots, 28 of which have gone on goal. Additionally, she leads the squad with four game-winning tallies. Currently, Sanaú Ruiz is first in the NEWMAC in shots shots on goal and game-winning goals. She is also second in the conference in both goals and points.

Marshall, a junior captain and goalie out of Mississauga, Ont., earned her honor after backstopping the Lyons in both winning efforts last week. In the victory against RPI, she surrendered just one goal, making six stops, including four in the opening half.

A former standout at Cawthra Park Secondary School, she went on to post a career-high 19 saves, including 10 in the first half and nine in the second as MHC blanked the Lions for their first NEWMAC victory of the season.

Currently, Marshall owns a 4-2-1 overall record, sporting a 1.25 goals against average. She has an .859 save percentage with 55 stops on the season. Among the NEWMAC leaders, Marshall is second in saves, fourth in save percentage, sixth in wins and ninth in goals against average.
