Soccer Powers Past Clark, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - A goal in the 83rd minute by first year Sara Sanaú Ruiz held strong for Mount Holyoke College, as the Lyons defeated Clark University, 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday. With the victory, the Lyons move to 7-3-1 and 2-1-1 in conference play. The Cougars are now 2-7-2 and 0-2-1 in the NEWMAC.

In the opening half, Clark outshot the Lyons by a 13-4 margin, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities as junior Zoe Marshall made six stops to send it into the second half locked at 0-0.

Mount Holyoke stepped up its efforts in the second stanza, taking the advantage in shots by a 7-5 margin. It would be Sanaú Ruiz in the 83rd minute to give the Lyons the lead as she scored off a fantastic give and go by senior Ashleigh Hartsock. It was Sanaú Ruiz's 13th goal of the season.

The Cougars were unable to even the score as the Lyons claimed victory, backed by Marshall's nine saves. In the Clark goal, Gabby Paolini made four stops, while the team also posted a save for a combined five saves.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Mount Holyoke travels to Wellesley (12pm), while Clark is at MIT (1pm).
