CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2013) - Powered by 11 first-half goals, the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team rolled to a 15-3 victory over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth on Monday in spring break action at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The Lyons move to 4-1 on the season with the victory, while the Corsairs shoulder their first loss of the season and are now 2-1.
Seven different players notched goals for MHC in the game, including three off the sticks of junior captain Naomi Miller, sophomore middie Kirsten Kilburn and junior middie Brianne Phelan.
Kilburn got things going in the game, scoring an unassisted marker at 28:52. Miller quickly followed less than 30 seconds later as she converted a feed from first year Catherine Ryan for the 2-0 advantage.
Ryan racked up her second assist minutes later as she passed it over to classmate Julia Bell, who fired it past Corsairs keeper Angelina Donovan with 22:41 to play. Phelan then tapped in one of her own off a feed from Bell and the Lyons went on to score six more, including two from Kilburn and a pair from senior attacker Molly Macdonald.
UMass-Dartmouth finally broke through near the end of the first half as Colleen Kane scored one past the reach of senior keeper Liz Malenfant with 1:45 remaining, but the Lyons took an 11-1 lead into the intermission.
Phelan led off the second half with a tally, but Madison Reilly responded for the Corsairs, to pull UMass-Dartmouth to within 10 (12-2) with 23:15 to play in the game. After another tally from Phelan, first year Katherine Kayser-Hirsh netted her first career tally from the free position and Miller rounded out the scoring with 14:02 to play with her third of the contest.
Despite another goal from Kane, the Corsairs could not overcome the first half deficit.
For the game, Miller added an assist with two ground balls, three draw controls and a game-best three caused turnovers. Kilburn chipped in with a game-best four draw controls in addition to her three tallies, while Phelan added three goals and two caused turnovers. Ryan boasted a goal and a game-best two assists.
In the MHC goal Malenfant picked up the win with two saves, while sophomore Aune Mitchell played the final 21:41 of relief, stopping two shots.
Kane led the way for the Corsairs with two goals and a draw control. Donovan made nine saves in the loss for UMass-Dartmouth.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Friday in a 9am match against the University of Southern Maine in Clermont. The Corsairs play Western New England on Thursday at 6pm, also in Clermont.
