Field Hockey Shoulders Non-Conference Loss at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – A pair of second half goals helped propel Williams College to a 2-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Ephs remain undefeated and are now 3-0, while the Lyons slip to 2-3 on the season.

The Ephs jumped out to the lead in the second half as senior Annie VanWagenen scored at 49:19 off a corner by sophomore Hannah Goodrick. Receiving the ball at the top of the circle, VanWagenen and blasted a shot past Lyons goalie Liz DiCesare for her fourth tally of the season.

Williams added to its lead at 51:56 when junior Brigid Bruno got possession of the ball in the circle. Making a move around a defender, she passed the ball off to first year Meredith Wright, who redirected the ball strategically between the goalies pads and the inside post to notch the second goal of the game.

The Lyons increased their pressure in both halves of the field following the goals, which resulted in a number of scoring chances. Minutes after the Ephs' second goal, junior Charlotte Wagner had a great shot off a corner by first year Colby Newsham, which was saved by keeper Margaret Draper.

Mount Holyoke had another solid chance on a shot by sophomore Sophie Perekslis, but Draper was up to the task, making a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Williams held the advantage in shots for the contest by a 31-15 margin. The Ephs also held an 18-9 margin in penalty corners. In goal, Draper earned the victory with eight saves, while DiCesare made a season-high 17 stops in the loss.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Thomas on the turf field at 3pm.
