Field Hockey Powers Past Westfield State, 8-3

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Six different players scored to lead the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team to an 8-3 victory over Westfield State University on Tuesday in non-conference action. With the win, the Lyons improve to 11-6, while the Owls slip to 7-9.

Mount Holyoke got the scoring started early as junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) collected a quick pass from first year midfielder Colby Newsham (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) and fired it in on the right side.

Wagner made it a 2-0 advantage less than three minutes later when she punched in the rebound of an Owls defensive save on the line. The Lyons continued to add to their total at 18:02 when Newsham tipped in a shot from the top of the arc by Wagner for a 3-0 lead.

Senior captain and forward Anna Hartman (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) made it a 4-0 contest at 21:56 after she banked in a short pass from sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic).

A feed by sophomore Kathryn Rawson (Old Town, Maine/Old Town) found the stick of first year midfielder Kristina Ramsden (Florence, Mass./Florence) for a tally at 26:50, but the Owls would get one back at 32:40 as sophomore middie Kristina Economou (Worcester, Mass./West Boylston) sent a shot flying into the left corner off a great pass by sophomore forward Megan Evans (Enfield, Conn./Enfield).

With Mount Holyoke holding a 5-1 lead after half, Westfield State turned on the pressure, capitalizing at 40:39 as Economou was able to redirect a loose ball at the line to make it 5-2. Junior forward Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) earned the primary assist.

The Owls pulled it to within 5-3 on an unassisted marker from Evans, but the Lyons stormed back with Braz converting off a short pass in the goalmouth by Newsham to make it 6-3 at 59:33. Sophomore forward Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y./Berkshire School) added a goal off a feed from Ramsden at 62:38 and it was Ramsden less than four minutes later who capped the scoring with her second of the contest.

Wagner and Ramsden each finished with two goals and an assist for the Lyons, while Newsham and Braz each had a goal and a helper. Sophomore goalie Ally Tessier (Coventry, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) stopped three shots in earning her first collegiate victory.

For the Owls, Economou finished with two goals to lead the way. Junior keeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) recorded 10 saves in the contest, while sophomore defender Delaney Gembis (North Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) had two defensive saves.

Mount Holyoke notched a 26-9 advantage in shots, also hold a 13-2 edge in penalty corners.
