CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three players had multiple goal games, including first year Bailey Tregoning to lead the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, which is the first for MIT over the Lyons since 2012, the Engineers move to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play. MHC slips to 10-6 on the season and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.
The homestanding Engineers opened up a quick lead in the first half as first year Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md./Linganore) notched her first career goal at 4:41. The forward was able to slip the ball past junior keeper Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass./Bishop Guertin) for the advantage.
Tregoning then picked up the assist, helping MIT go up by a 2-0 margin as senior forward Morgan Gulliver (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) scored at 9:19. Mount Holyoke countered at 17:47 on the team-leading 14th goal of the season for junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School). Off a feed from first year defender Mirjam Keochakian (Hamburg, Germany/Deerfield Academy (MA), Wagner got one past senior Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) to make it a 2-1 game.
MIT was able to head into the halftime with a 3-1 lead as Gulliver once again collected a pass from Tregoning, firing it past DiCesare at 27:25. The Engineers held an 11-5 advantage in shots for the opening frame, as well as a 5-2 edge on penalty corners.
In the second half, the Engineers continued to gain momentum, capitalizing at 47:56 on a penalty corner injection by senior Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass./Auburn). Controlling the ball after the insert, sophomore forward Emily Penn (Columbia, Md./Howard) her team-leading 17th of the season at 48:19.
Mount Holyoke had a run of chances immediately following as both Wagner and first year midfielder Colby Newsham (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) notched consecutive shots, but Kyritsis was up to the task.
The Engineers sealed the victory at 67:38 as Penn notched her 18th of the year. McNamara earned the assist on the tally. Mount Holyoke had a last effort in the final seconds but the MIT defense held strong.
MIT finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in shots, including an 11-7 margin on goal. The Engineers also held a narrow 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Westfield State at 7pm. MIT is in action next Saturday, hosting Babson in its regular season finale at 1pm.
