Volleyball Falls in Tri-Match Action at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team competed in tri-match action on Saturday at Connecticut College. The Lyons fell to the host Camels and to Worcester State University as well.

The Camels (12-9) defeated Mount Holyoke (3-21) 3-0 with set scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-10 in the early match. The Lancers from Worcester State posted a 3-0 shutout against Mount Holyoke (3-21) in the second matchup, recording a 25-18, 25-23, 27-25 triumph. Connecticut College closed out the tripleheader by taking a 3-0 decision against Worcester. The set scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-14 in favor of the hosts.

Connecticut College sophomore Ella Johnson (Seal Beach, Calif.) erupted with 17 kills and five blocks to lead the Camels in the sweep.  Emily Arterbury (Austin, Texas) dished out 35 assists for the hosts. Junior libero Cailyn Straubel (Dallas, Texas) registered 21 digs in Saturday's action.

Caroline Branigan (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) finished with 16 digs while classmate Belinda Mullally (Garden Grove, Caif.) added 10 kills, seven aces and six digs for the winning side.

Worcester State College senior outside hitter Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) posted 24 kills and 11 digs for the Lancers.  Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) dished out 52 assists while adding 13 digs for Worcester.  Junior Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) finished with 16 kills and 10 digs for the Lancers.

Mount Holyoke College junior outside hitter Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) had a big day for the Lyons, contributing 22 kills, 21 digs, five blocks and three aces for the Lyons. Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill.) chipped in with 13 kills and 17 digs for Mount Holyoke.  Sophomore setter Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) dished out 26 assists to go with her 15 digs in the two matches.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, hosting NEWMAC-rival Smith at 7pm on the court at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
