Volleyball Falls in Tri-Match Action

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University senior setter Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) served seven aces during a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-14) women's volleyball victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College on Fall Festival Weekend at Rodgers Recreation Center.

Violet's first service ace pushed the senior past former Seahawk Lisa Zabel '11 on the school's all-time records.

Salve Regina (10-7) wasted no time in taking control of the first set with Mount Holyoke. Violet set up two points as classmates Katelyn Beauregard (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) sandwiched their kills around a pair of errors from the visitors.

Trailing 18-11, the Lyons went on a 5-0 run to close within two, but consecutive kills from senior Erin McGloin (West Islip, N.Y.) started a 7-0 run for the Seahawks to finish the set, 25-16. That was the closest set for Mount Holyoke which failed to reach double-figures in the middle set.

Duggan and Beauregard led all players with seven kills apiece; Tara Kuck (Huntington, N.Y.) came off the bench to provide four kills. Violet's match-high 29 kills put her career mark at 2,937 - on pace to double the number two mark (1,575 set by Rachael Cirella '09) and become the first to reach the 3,000 milestone.

Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) led the Lyons with five kills; Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) and Stephany Yang (Glen Allen, Va.) both had seven digs to pace Mount Holyoke. Salve Regina's Dianna Tauro (Melrose, Mass.) led all players with 13 digs.

Mount Holyoke (2-15) lost its second match of the day, also 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-18), playing a non-league match with Roger Williams University on the neutral Seahawk court. In that contest, Sweeting boasted 12 kills with six digs, while senior Rebecca Bland (Durham, N.C.) added four kills. Yang had eight assists in the match, while Lyon led all MHC players with seven digs.

Salve Regina returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action when it hosts Gordon College on Wednesday (7 p.m.) before heading out for a six-match road trip. The Lyons return to action on Wednesday also, hosting Coast Guard in NEWMAC action (7 p.m.).
