Williams Pushes Swimming and Diving to 166-134 Triumph Over Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 17, 2010) – Led by first year Lauren Williams, the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team downed Westfield State University 166-134 this evening in its first dual meet of the 2010-11 campaign. The Lyons grabbed first place in nine of the 16 events to secure their second straight win over the Owls.

Lauren Williams Williams figured in on four first place finishes to set the tone. After teaming up with first year Sin Seanne Ng, sophomore Lindsey Kanno and sophomore Madeline Magee to post a winning time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:59.68), she claimed individual titles in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.86), 100-yard butterfly (1:06.27) and 200-yard individual medley (2:22.45).

Mount Holyoke also received solid production from Ng and Magee, who posted two individual wins apiece. Ng touched the wall first in the 50 (30.60) and 100-yard (1:07.03) backstroke events, while Magee grabbed top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.59) and 50-yard butterfly (29.43).

The Lyons' final victory came from Kanno, who posted the top time in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.75).

Westfield State (0-2) ended the night with a total of seven wins. Junior Kate Werner and junior Jenna Tasse contributed to three apiece. The duo joined forces with Kayla Ramsden and first Kate Eheander to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:55.34). Prior to that, Werner prevailed in the 500 (5:41.69) and 1,000-yard (5:41.69) freestyle races, and Tasse came out on top in the 50 (25.69) and 100-yard freestyle (56.89) competitions.

The Owls also received a boost from sophomore Kim Schmidt, who captured top honors in both the 1-meter (227.60) and 3-meter (226.35) diving events.

Mount Holyoke (1-0) will kick off its home slate on Saturday against Western Connecticut State University.
