Keating and Irish Push Golf to Fifth Place at Williams Fall Classic

Golf WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (Oct. 10, 2010) – With senior Sarah Keating and junior Alexandra Irish leading the way, the Mount Holyoke College women's golf team grabbed fifth place at the Williams College Fall Classic this weekend. A total of ten teams and 48 individuals took part in the tournament, which took place at the Taconic Golf Club (par 71 – 5,826 yards).

Keating (87, 80) and Irish (83, 84) finished in a tie for eighth place overall with their matching scores of 167. The Lyons also received a boost from sophomore Felicitas Gerlach, who collected 24th place with her score of 184 (90, 94). Meanwhile, sophomore Kate Merrill chipped in with a 30th place performance (194 – 100, 94).

Led by Alexandra Groetsema, Williams secured the team title with its score of 663. The Ephs narrowly edged out Amherst College, which finished just two strokes off the pace with a score of 665. Middlebury College (671), Wellesley College (711), Mount Holyoke (712), Vassar College (731), Williams (754), Bowdoin College (823), Bates College (865) and Westfield State University (884) rounded out the field.

Groetsema earned medalist honors with her two round tally of 149 (71, 78). She finished eight shots in front of Wellesley's Kimberly Eaton, who carded a 157 (81, 76). Middlebury's Flora Weeks fired a 160 (83, 77) to take third place.

Mount Holyoke will put the finishing touches on its fall slate next weekend, when it competes in the Wellesley Fall Invitational. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
