Windham, Conn. - October 29, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team scored a pair of goals to open the second half and was able to add an insurance tally late to hold on for a 3-0 victory against Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening at Rick McCarthy Field.
With the win, the Lyons are now 9-8 on the year, while the Warriors fall to 5-12 overall. Mount Holyoke College held a 9-8 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play and were awarded seven penalty corners compared to Eastern Connecticut's one.
Offensively, Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) registered her fourth goal in the last three games, while Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) notched her team-leading 11th marker of the season.
In net, senior goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) made six saves in her ninth win of the year, while Gianna Molinari (Windsor Locks, Conn.) came on for the final 3:45 and preserved the victory with one save. Their counterpart, Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn.), made one save in the setback.
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, the Lyons were granted a pair of penalty corners just seven seconds apart, but the Warriors' defensive unit was able to damper the Lyons attack to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. With under 30 seconds to play in the frame, Brooks got her first chance of the game but Integlia withstood the chance and kept the ball from entering the cage to keep the game scoreless after one.
Eastern Connecticut rattled off three shots in a span of nine seconds midway through the second half, but Turner was able to make the first two saves before Khiara Valentine (Morristown, N.J.) sent a bid just wide.
Opening the second half, the Lyons had a pair of chances early, before Brooks registered her eighth goal of the season and fourth goal in the last three games to give Mount Holyoke College a 1-0 advantage with 10:48 on the clock. Junior Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) registered an assist on the goal.
Just 2:00 later, Golding-Powers was at it again as she sent in a penalty corner that ended up on the stick of Phoebe Aaronson (Mountain View, Calif.), who set up Lawrence for her 11th goal of the year to give the Lyons a 2-0 laed with 8:34 to play in the third quarter.
With less than four minutes to play in the game, Golding-Powers sent in another penalty corner and Aaronson was able to set up Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) for her ninth goal of the year to provide the Lyons some insurance in the victory.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to WPI for a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
