Wellesley, Mass. - October 12, 2019 - In a battle among New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to Wellesley College, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Butler Stadium.
With the loss, the Lyons fall to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Blue improve to 7-5 on the year with a 3-2 mark against NEWMAC opponents.
Wellesley held a 25-8 shot advantage over the course of the game, while the Blue also had nine penalty corners compared to the Lyons' three. In net, Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) made nine saves, while her counterpart, Janelle Sullivan (Philadephia, Pa.) posted three saves in the victory.
Mount Holyoke College got off to a fast start with two goals in the first quarter. Just 4:02 in to the contest, Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) blasted a shot towards goal off of a penalty corner which was tipped into the back of the net by Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) for her fifth goal of the season. Just 5:44 later, Golding-Powers added her second of the game after burying a one-on-one opportunity on Sullivan to make it 2-0, Lyons, with 5:14 to play in the first frame.
Robb added a goal in the second quarter as the sophomore buried a chance that was set up by Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) with 4:25 to play in the half, giving Mount Holyoke College a 3-0 lead at the break.
Just 1:37 into the second half, Wellesley got on the board as Carson Dennis (Gross Pointe Farms, Mich.) netted her sixth goal of the season on a penalty stroke that made it 3-1. Wellesley would then go on to even the game at three as another from Dennis with 2:22 left cut the deficit to one before Maddie Bettencourt (Virginia Beach, Va.) found the back of the net with 46 seconds to play, making it 3-3.
Heading to the overtime period, the Blue was granted a penalty corner and with 4:29 to play in the first frame and Dennis completed the hat trick with a blistering shot from the top of the arch to deliver the victory for the hosts.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Regis College for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday, October 17.
