South Hadley, Mass. - October 20, 2020 - Mount Holyoke College Athletics is excited to be virtually hosting standout power forward for the Los Angeles Sparks and WNBA Player's Association President Nneka Ogwumike on Tuesday, October 27.
Beginning at 6 p.m., Ogwumike will address Mount Holyoke College student-athletes and other guests and will be answering questions pertaining to the importance of representation and the responsibility of collective action.
"I am thrilled to announce that Nneka Ogwumike will be visiting with Lyons Nation," said Lori Hendricks '92, Chair of Physical Education and Director of Athletics at Mount Holyoke. "Her incredible resume of collegiate and WNBA achievements speaks for itself; however, some of her greatest and most powerful achievements have been off the court supporting social justice issues of race and gender. I look forward to our student-athletes hearing from this remarkable champion about her journey into leadership and activism."
Ogwumike will share her own journey as a student-athlete at Stanford and go into detail about her experiences as not only a top player in the WNBA, but also as the President of the WNBA Player's Association.
Drafted No. 1 overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft, Ogwumike went on to win the WNBA Championship with the Sparks in 2016 and was named league MVP that same year. She is also a six-time All Star and a two-time FIBA World Cup champion. She was recently named to Fast Company's 2020 Most Creative People in Business list for her leadership working towards meaningful change for women's sports. Nneka is Nigerian American and her name means "Mother is Supreme" in Igbo. A strong advocate for BIPOC and women's rights, Nneka never shies away from what she believes in and always uses her platform for good.
She has earned a WNBA championship with the Sparks and numerous MVP awards both for her regular season and championship performances. However, some of her greatest and most powerful achievements have been off the court. Currently, Ogwumike is serving in her second elected term as the president of the WNBA's Player's Association. Under her leadership, the Player's Association has negotiated a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and has addressed inequities between the NBA and WNBA pandemic "bubbles." She is a leader among activists and a league with a history of addressing racial inequity.
"I'm thrilled that our students have the opportunity to hear from Nneka Ogwumike," added head Mount Holyoke College basketball coach Jackie Ward. "Not only is she a leader on the court, but she is also at the forefront of efforts to combat racial injustice and to fight for equal pay for female athletes. Her work transcends basketball and I think our students will be able to learn from her experiences and apply them to their own efforts to inspire change."
