Cross Country Solid at NCAA New England Regionals

WESTFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 10, 2012) - The Mount Holyoke College cross country team concluded its fall 2012 slate on Saturday, finising 19th of 51 competing teams at the NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by Westfield State University. The Lyons posted a combined 609 points at the event, which was won by the top-ranked team in the region and NEWMAC-rival, MIT.

First year Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) was the Lyons top finisher in the 6k race, posting a time of 23:25.88 to finish 89th overall in the field of 367 runners.  She was followed by sophomore Dana Fry (Avon, Conn./Miss Porter's School), who was 103rd on the afternoon, crossing the line with a time of 23:41.98.

Junior Lucia Garcia (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield) was the third overall finisher for MHC, posting a time of 24:06.75 - good for 122nd overall. Senior Julia Merton (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) crossed the finish line in 24:25.69 to finish 138th overall, while classmate Phoebe Tengdin (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) rounded out the top five in 161st with a time of 24:51.31.

Sophomore Elizabeth Baker (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic School) was 211st with a mark of 25:49.64, while first year Hillary Detert (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) rounded out the team scoring in 219th with a time of 25:53.97.

Fellow NEWMAC-rival MIT was dominant in Saturday's race, as five of their seven runners placed in the top 30. With their team victory, the Engineers and Williams College, which finished second at the meet, earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
