Cross Country Finishes Second at Keene State Invitational

KEENE, N.H. (Sept. 29, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College cross country team saw each of its five team finishers place in the top-25 as the Lyons were second overall of six teams at the 2012 Keene State Invitational. MHC posted a score of 67, finishing second only to the host Owls.

Mount Holyoke, which has now competed in three races, was paced once again by first year Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) as she finished fourth overall and first on the team with a time of 19:42 on the 5k course.

Close behind was sophomore Dana Fry (Avon, Conn./Miss Porter's School), who was 15th overall and 12th among qualifying team finishers with a time of 20:26. Senior Julia Merton (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) was 18th overall and 15th in the team qualifying with a mark of 20:36, while junior Lucia Garcia (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield) was 21st overall and 17th in the team qualifying with a time of 20:47.

Junior Phoebe Tengdin (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) rounded out the finishes in the team category, posting a time of 20:53 to place 24th overall and 19th among the team finishers.

The Lyons also had several solid individual finishes on the day as sophomore Elizabeth Baker (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic School) was 29th with a time of 21:09, while first year Hillary Detert (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) placed 36th in a time of 21:33.

Mount Holyoke edged out NEWMAC-rival Springfield for second with 67 points. The Pride took third place with 71 points, while St. Joseph's (ME) was fourth (86) and Fitchburg State was fifth (145).

The Lyons return to action next Saturday when they compete at the Westfield State James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University.  Action begins at 12pm.
