Volleyball outlasts Connecticut College 3-2 for fourth straight victory

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team took its fourth straight victory and raised its record over the .500 mark with a 3-2 non-conference decision over Connecticut College Tuesday night in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. 

With the win (12-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12), Mount Holyoke improves to 12-11 while the Connecticut College drops to 7-13. Mount Holyoke is 16-9 all-time against Connecticut College, with its last win coming four meetings ago in 2003.

First-year Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) led the Lyons' attack delivering a career-high 22 kills (hitting .447) and 11 digs, while senior Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.) recorded 12 kills and 19 digs. Senior Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) and sophomore Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) notched 15 digs apiece, while first-year Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) paced the offense totaling 33 assists.  

For Connecticut College, Riley Lord totaled 15 kills, while Katherine Randall posted 13 kills and 14 digs. Julia Dailey recorded 27 digs for the Camels, while Natasha Shrivastava and Olivia Dow produced 28 and 27 assists, respectively. 

The Camels began the first set with an early 14-1 lead until the Lyons responded with a 5-0 run to reduce the margin to 14-6. Connecticut continued to pull away from Mount Holyoke, taking the first set 25-12. 

Mount Holyoke did not let the first set set the tone for the rest of the evening. The second set was a close battle as the Lyons' effort brought the score to a 15-15 tie. Ultimately Mount Holyoke pulled away, capping off the set with an 8-2 run to take the second set 25-19. 

Connecticut began the first set with an early 7-5 advantage. The Lyons responded with a 4-0 run capped off by a service ace from Abeja to take a 9-7 lead. Connecticut took the lead again at 11-10 until the Lyons responded with a 5-1 stretch to regain the edge 15-12. Mount Holyoke held the advantage for the remainder of the set ending with a service ace from Duffrin to take home the third set 25-21.

The Camels jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the fourth set. The Lyons climbed into a 18-18 tie, however the Camels were able to pull away in the fourth set 25-20 topped off by a kill from Emma Wheeler. 

The final frame remained a close battle for both teams as the score was tied at 10-10 until Mount Holyoke began to pull away posting three points. After a timeout called by Connecticut, the Camels responded with back-to-back kills from Christina Leduc to reduce the margin to 13-12. The Lyons remained focused as Barton delivered the final two kills to finish the final set 15-12 and claim the 3-2 victory over Connecticut. 

The Lyons return to action on Thursday, October 27 at 7 pm when they host Emmanuel on their Senior Night.
