Track and Field Breaks Two School Records at 2022 NEWMAC Championships

Northampton, Mass. - April 30, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team placed 8th overall scoring 31 points at the 2022 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships hosted at the Smith Outdoor Track on Saturday. The Lyons saw two school records broken as junior Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) broke the 21-year old school record in the 10k before first-year Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) broke the 3000 meter steeplechase program record.

Selkin delivered a second-place finish in her 10k debut by recording a time of 37:35.32, breaking the school record by over 20 seconds which was previously held by Katy Trandem who ran a time of 37:55.45 in 2001. Lancaster placed fifth overall, posting a personal record in the 3000 meter steeplechase by clocking in a time of 11:45.95. Lancaster's performance broke the school record which was previously held by Dana Fry who ran 11:53.27 in 2015. 

In the 100 meter dash, junior Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) recorded a personal best by running a time of 13.51 seconds, while senior Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) finished second in the 1500 meter run by crossing the line in 4:48.31. In the 800 meter run, first-year Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) placed eighth overall by collecting a personal best of 2:24.43 which ranks eighth all-time in Mount Holyoke program history, while in the 400 meter hurdle dash, junior Eliza Butler (Hartsdale, N.Y.) recorded a ninth-place finish by posting a personal best of 1:14.18.

First-year Addison Heintz (Apex, N.C.) was the Lyon's top finisher in the 200 meter dash, clocking in a time of 28.24 seconds, while Selkin finished third in the 5k by recording a time of 18:04.61. Rounding out the day for Mount Holyoke on the track, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Beaver, Butler, first-year Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.), and senior Sydney Nash (New Hartford, Conn.) placed ninth by posting a time of 4:24.95. 

Representing Mount Holyoke in the field events, Sternberg notched a top-15 finish in the long jump by recording a mark of 4.57 meters, while in the pole vault first-year Helen Frank (Rochester, N.Y.) posted a mark of 2.50 meters. In the javelin throw, sophomore Allyson Joseph (Danbury, Conn.) placed 13th by throwing a mark of 19.97 meters, while in the hammer throw, first-year Kara Setal (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded a mark of 32.44 meters. In the triple jump, Sternberg posted a mark of 9.53 meters. In the shot put, junior Emma Doyle (Lebanon, N.H.) finished in ninth place with a mark of 10.70 meters followed by a mark of 29.87 meters in the discus throw.

Up next, qualified individuals and relays from the Mount Holyoke College track and field team will compete at the NCAA Division III New England Championships, hosted at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7. The Friday session is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. and the Saturday session will start at 10:00 a.m.
