Track and Field Opens Season at Smith College Winter Classic; Jacob Breaks School Record in 1k

Northampton, Mass. - December 4, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team opened the 2021-22 indoor season on Saturday afternoon at the Smith College Winter Classic. The Lyons also had four student-athletes compete at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener where senior Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) broke the school record in the 1000 meter run. 

Jacob broke the 1000-meter school record by 3.54 seconds, crossing the line with a time of 2:59.99 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. This marks a 6.88-second personal record for the biology major. The record was previously held by Elizabeth DeLeon who ran a time of 3:03.53 in 2015. Jacob currently holds two school records as she broke the 4 x 800 meter relay record in 2019.

At the Smith College Winter classic in the field events, junior Sara Robillard (Delran, N.J.) claimed her first collegiate win in the pole vault with a college-best mark of 2.15 meters, while first-year Emma Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) took eighth in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 11.20 meters. Junior Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) placed ninth with a college-best mark of 4.45 meters while Doyle placed fifth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 10.35 meters.

On the track, first-year Addison Heintz (Apex, N.C.) finished the 60 meter dash prelims with a time of 8.67 seconds while senior Sydney Nash (New Hartford, Conn.) placed seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.2. Junior Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.) produced a second-place finish in the 800 meter run finishing with a time of 2:30.7.

First-year Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) claimed her first collegiate victory in the 1000 meter run crossing the line with a personal-best time of 3:19.1 followed by classmate Olivia Johnson (Mount Desert, Maine) who finished third with a time of 3:23.7. Rounding out the day for the Lyons was Nash in the 200 meter dash who ran a time of 29.92 seconds.

Junior Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) and seniors Madeline Rieders (Arlington, Mass.) and Hannah Reiders (Arlington, Mass.) also competed in the Women's 5000 meter run at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday afternoon. Selkin was the Lyons' top finisher with a time of 17:34.09, followed by Hannah Rieder's mark of 18:10.72. Madeline Rieders rounded out the three with a finishing time of 18:37.28.

This was the lone competition of the Fall 2021 semester for the Mount Holyoke College track and field team, as the Lyons will resume competition on Saturday, January 29 at the Wesleyan University Invitational.
