Tennis Takes On Region's Best at NEWITT

South Hadley, Mass. - October 8, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team had seven student-athletes competing among the region's top competition at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament over the course of the weekend, as the three-day tournament was hosted between Amherst College and Smith College.

The tournament started on Friday as Annika Chai (London, England) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) headed to Amherst College where they met Sarah Pertsemlidis and Kimberly Liao from MIT in the A Draw and dropped their opening round match-up, before taking on Babson's top pair. The duo would fall once again and saw their tournament come to a close.

In the C Draw, junior Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) and Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) competed at Smith on Friday and took on Melinda Alviar and Cristina DeAgazio on Wellesley before falling to the Blue student-athletes and entering the consolation bracket. The duo then matched up with Wheaton's Alexis Acosta and Katie Steinberg and won, advancing to the consolation semifinals to take on Reilly Malz and Marian Bulkey of Springfield College. Successful once again, the duo advanced to the C Draw Consolation Finals and competed against Ashley Felix and Alexa Monos of Smith.

Representing Mount Holyoke College in the D Draw at Smith College on Friday was Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii), who teamed up with Wellesley's Celeste Tran and won both of their matches in Pool B. On Friday, they defeated a team of student-athletes from Endicott before besting a pair from Smith on Saturday. Also in the D Draw was Katherine Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) and Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez (Cancun, Mexico), teamed up and dropped both of their matches in Pool C.
