SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Elle Rimando placed fourth in the long jump, and first-year Ioanna Tsoni qualified for the 100 hurdles finals in a team-record time as the the two-day NEWMAC Track & Field Championships got under way Friday at Springfield College.

Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had a top effort of 5.10 meters (16'8.75") out of six attempts, tying with Babson's Ashna Kirshnamurthy. Kirshnamurthy was awarded third place ahead of Rimando due to a better second-best attempt, but Rimando scored five team points for the Lyons with her performance, putting Mount Holyoke in eighth place among 10 participating teams in the early going.

Tsoni (Athens, Greece) competed in her first collegiate 100-meter hurdles race in Friday's preliminary heats and finished in 15.48 seconds, the third-fastest heat time among 15 athletes. Tsoni advanced to Saturday's finals in the event and moved into first place on Mount Holyoke's all-time performance list in the event, replacing former Carrie Turban's former record of 15.55 seconds from 1996. It is the third team record Tsoni has set in her first year, along with the indoor 60 hurdles and the indoor long jump.
