WPI Runs Past Soccer, 5-0, in NEWMAC Play

South Hadley, Mass. - October 19, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to visiting WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the MHC Soccer Field.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-12-1 with an 0-7-0 record in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers improve to 12-3-0 on the year with a 4-2 mark in league play. WPI held a 47-5 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, and were awarded nine corner kicks compared to the Lyons' two.

In net for Mount Holyoke College, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) posted 13 saves in the setback, while the duo of Mandy St. Germain (Upton, Mass.) and Lauren Francis (Natick, Mass.) combined for the clean sheet, as St. Germain made two saves en route to her 12th win of the year.

After a scoreless, back-and-forth beginning to the contest, WPI finally broke the silence as Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) took in a pass from Lilly Proulx (New Boston, N.H.) and found the back of the net to make it 1-0, visitors, with 27:16 to play in the opening half. Just 22 seconds later, Lauren Kaija (Reading, Vt.) made it 2-0 as the junior converted a penalty kick after a Lyons' foul in the box.

Just 8:25 into the second half, McCrea tacked on her second of the game as the senior drove down the left side of the box and chipped a shot over the head of Delgado and into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 3-0, before Annika Keck (Oakland, Calif.) scored her first-career goal when a loose ball popped out to the side, allowing for Keck to finish her chance into the open net, making it 4-0 with 21:36 remaining.

With less than five minutes left to play, WPI added its fifth goal of the game when Grace Casey (Winchester, Mass.) slipped a pass through the Lyons' back line to Leah Beauton (Colchester, Conn.), who then finished her point-blank chance against Delgado to make it 5-0 with 4:35 to play.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Wesleyan University for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, October 22.
