Lacrosse Routs Bard in Regular Season Finale, 20-0

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (April 24, 2010) – Using a balanced scoring attack and a stingy defense, the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team breezed to a 20-0 triumph over non-conference foe Bard College today at the Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer Complex. Eleven players scored goals for the Lyons, who closed out their regular season with an overall record of 9-5 and a league mark of 3-3. It was the first ever meeting between the programs.

Mount Holyoke’s 20 goals, 11 assists and 31 points were all season highs. In addition, the Lyons established a new program record for margin of victory in the contest. They had previously defeated three teams by 15 goals.

Senior Jessica Brezicha and sophomore Jeanmarie Petersen combined for the third shutout in school history. Neither goalkeeper faced a shot. Mount Holyoke’s other two shutouts came in 1993 against MIT (17-0) and in 1975 against Worcester State College (13-0).

First year attacker Christina Horimoto piled up five points on two goals and three assists to lead the way for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons also received solid production from attackers Alex Crean and Molly Macdonald, who registered four points apiece. Crean found the net twice and dished out a pair of assists, while Macdonald posted her first career hat trick to go with one helper. Midfielders Perry Markell and Katya Planson chipped in with two goals and one assist apiece.

Mount Holyoke came up with all 22 draw controls in the game, bringing their season total to a program record 265. The Lyons entered the week as the national leaders in draw controls per game with 19.0. Markell led the way with a program record 17 today. It was the fourth time this year that the senior has secured 13 or more.

After building a 13-0 advantage at the break, Mount Holyoke outscored Bard (1-10, 0-8 SKY) 7-0 in the second half to put things away. The guests finished with large edges in shots (31-1), draw controls (22-0) and ground balls (27-14).

The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament is slated to get underway with three Quarterfinal Round matchups on Wednesday. Third seeded Mount Holyoke (9-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) will host fifth seeded Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m. The Lyons finished in a three way tie for third place with Wellesley College and MIT, but were awarded the third seed due to their win over second seeded Springfield College. In the remaining Quarterfinal Round contests, Springfield will host Smith College and Wellesley will entertain MIT. Top seeded Babson College has earned a first round bye. The Beavers will host both Semifinal Round games as well as the NEWMAC Championship.
