SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 20, 2010) – Senior midfielder Peggy Wefald racked up five goals and three assists to push the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team to a convincing 16-3 victory over longtime rival Smith College this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the Lyons second straight win over their New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes and their third triumph in their last four outings.

Wefald has now scored three goals or more in each of Mount Holyoke’s last eight games. The midfielder has totaled 11 hat tricks this year. Mount Holyoke also received solid production from junior attacker Clara Raugei, who posted six points on four goals and two assists. Sisters Perry Markell and Georgia Markell added two tallies apiece. The Lyons remaining goals came from first year midfielder Lindsey Kanno, sophomore attacker Alex Crean and first year attacker Molly MacDonald.

Mount Holyoke piled up 15 draw controls in the contest, bringing their season total to a program record 243. The Lyons entered the contest as the national leaders in draw controls per game with 19.0. Perry Markell led the way with seven tonight.

Smith’s three goals came from sophomore midfielder Meaghan Fileti, senior defender Kaitlyn Murdough and first year midfielder Chelby Wakefield.

Mount Holyoke never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 14 goals in the waning minutes.

The Lyons finished with large advantages in shots (34-10), draw controls (15-6) and ground balls (22-9). Senior Jessica Brezicha went the distance between the pipes for the hosts, stopping a career best six shots en route to her first collegiate triumph. At the other end, first year goalkeeper Meredith Kallfelz made eight saves for the Pioneers.

Prior to the contest, a senior day celebration took place to honor Wefald, Markell, Brezicha, Kristen Cody and Rachel Kurzweil for their contributions to the Lyons program.

Mount Holyoke (8-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) will put the finishing touches on its regular season schedule on Saturday, when it visits Bard College at 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Smith (3-11, 0-5 NEWMAC) will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The NEWMAC Tournament is slated to get underway with Quarterfinal Round contests next Wednesday. Pairings will be announced this weekend.
