Wefald Collects Second Straight NEWMAC Player of the Week Award

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 19, 2010) – For the second week in a row, Mount Holyoke College senior midfielder Peggy Wefald has been named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week. It was the third time in her career that she has earned the award.

Wefald piled up 10 points on eight goals and two assists to lead the Lyons to a 1-1 record during week of April 12-18. The midfielder also chipped in with nine draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. She exploded for five goals and two assists in Mount Holyoke’s thrilling 12-11 double overtime triumph over Springfield College on Tuesday. After knotting things up at 11-11 in the waning seconds of the first extra session, she found the back of the net for what proved to be the winner 2:40 into the second overtime. For the season, Wefald has amassed a league best 55 goals. Her nine assists are good for tops on the team, and she has also chipped in with 59 draw controls, 16 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. The captain has recorded five goals or more on eight occasions this spring. She has found the back of the net at least three times in each of the Lyons last seven outings.

No stranger to NEWMAC honors, Wefald was a NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team performer in each of her first three seasons as a Lyon. For her career, she has registered 244 points on 209 goals and 35 assists. In addition to owning the program record for career goals, she is also the program record holder for career draw controls with 236.

Mount Holyoke (7-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) has captured victories in seven of its last ten games. The Lyons will put the finishing touches on their home slate tomorrow, when they host longtime rival Smith College at 7:00 p.m.. They will enter the contest as the national leaders in draw controls per game with 19.0.
