#11 Babson Survives Upset Bid By Lacrosse, 15-11

BABSON PARK, Mass. (April 3, 2010) – Led by senior midfielder Anna Collins, the Babson College women’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-3 halftime deficit to defeat upset minded Mount Holyoke College 15-11 this afternoon at MacDowell Field. Collins recorded all five of her goals in the second half, as the Beavers held on for their 26th straight win over a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe. They are currently ranked 11th in the nation according to the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll.

Babson also received a boost from senior midfielder Kaitlyn Pettengill, who posted four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore attacker Trisha Babson chipped in with a hat trick.

The Lyons were once again paced by senior midfielders Peggy Wefald and Perry Markell. Wefald found the back of the net five times for the fourth game in a row. Meanwhile, Markell recorded her fifth hat trick of the spring. Both players finished with one assist and six draw controls. Sophomore attacker Hilary Bombard added a pair of tallies.

Mount Holyoke sophomore goalkeeper Jeanmarie Petersen kept Babson off the board for the majority of the first half, allowing just three goals while making nine of her 10 saves. At the other end, Wefald and Markell each netted a pair of goals to help the Lyons build a 6-3 halftime advantage.

The Beavers exploded out of the gate in the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 goals to open up a 12-8 cushion. Collins and Daley got things going with back to back strikes in the opening two minutes to slice the deficit to 6-5. Wefald answered with her third tally of the day, but Babson ran off four straight goals to take a 9-7 lead at the 20:47 mark. Collins and Babson each scored twice during the rally.

Following a goal by Bombard, the Beavers netted three more times to build a 12-8 advantage with12:07 remaining in regulation. Refusing to go away, Mount Holyoke responded with a 3-1 run over the next seven minutes to trim the margin to 13-11 at the 5:10 mark. Wefald scored twice and Markell added another during the spurt. From there, Babson (8-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) registered the final two goals to put things away.

The Beavers finished with advantages in both shots (33-29) and ground balls (24-18), while the Lyons posted an 18-10 edge in draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Macary made 12 saves for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke (5-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Wellesley College for a league game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
