Lacrosse Nips Eastern Connecticut, 15-13

MANSFIELD, Conn. (March 31, 2010) – With senior midfielder Peggy Wefald leading the way, the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team picked up a thrilling 15-13 triumph over non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University this afternoon at the Mansfield Complex. It was the Lyons first ever win over the Warriors. The two teams had faced off two times previously.

Wefald exploded for six goals for the third game in a row and added a career best three assists. Her nine points matched a career high. Mount Holyoke also received a boost from classmate Perry Markell, who collected two goals, one assist and 13 draw controls. Junior attacker Clara Raugei and sophomore midfielder Taylor Hedges chipped in with two tallies apiece.

Leading the way for Eastern Connecticut State (2-4, 0-0 LEC) was sophomore attacker Ashley Prizio, who found the back of the net four times. First year midfielder Daniela Marchitto added two goals and a helper.

Neither side led by more than two goals in a game that saw 11 ties and four lead changes. Markell netted what proved to be the winner at the 5:18 mark, when she took advantage of a free position opportunity to put Mount Holyoke in front 14-13. Wefald then recorded her sixth goal of the game in the final minute to put things away.

The Lyons finished with decisive advantages in both shots (34-20) and draw controls (20-10). Sophomore goalkeeper Jeanmarie Petersen made four saves en route to her fifth win of the year. At the other end, first year Nancy Ibrahim made 12 stops for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke (5-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) will resume its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Saturday, when it visits Babson College at 1:00 p.m.
